Pride: Photographs After Stonewall // Fred W. McDarrah

A visual chronicle of life in New York’s gay community circa 1970, by the incomparable Fred W. McDarrah, released in time for the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion and World Pride Day in June 2019.

A re-release of a photography book originally released in 1994, Pride examines gay life in New York in photograph form. Bars, meeting houses and the general haunts of those residing in the area are highlighted, as are some of the key figures around the time of the Stonewall rebellion and the years following, with photos spanning from 1959 to 1994.

Each photo is captioned; some simply describe the place, or name the people, but a number give greater insight into the context of the picture. Some background information to a number of gay rights movements are briefly given, and we see some of the biggest personalities who led them, occasionally accompanied by some excerpts from interviews and discussions.

Seeing pictures of some of the biggest personalities to lead the gay rights movement in its many forms is incredible. This is a time we especially need to acknowledge that the gay rights movement wasn’t just on the shoulders on white, cis gay men, but also made powerful through the work of transwomen of colour, and of gender non-conforming, nonbinary and queer individuals. And we get to see all of them here. Accompanied by a foreword by Hilton Als and a small bio of Fred (and the parades he photographed) by Allen Ginsberg, it pretty much has everything that a book like this would need.

Pride releases May 7th, 2019.
